we have breathed the same air

we have memorized the smells that are flesh and

hair

today for that many
we have written who the we that is us will be
and today i have realized
we are still a mystery

standing naked in separate corners of this room
that is grief that is fear that is loss

even your tears can't reach the place that was aching inside of me this morning in the dark as i watched jupiter kiss the moon
and drew milk that it seems will never be put to use

i am padding this empty nest
with sympathetic smiles
and baskets of aphorisms

i miss your palms
and your paint bespeckled cuticles

and your broken country songs

i miss how i used to love the taste
of your smoker's breath

i miss you
